Dr AW Dreyer
Dr AW Dreyer is a medical doctor who specialized as a clinical microbiologist at the University of Pretoria in 2011. He started his career as a consultant for the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) in Clinical Microbiology followed by joining the Centre for Tuberculosis at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) where he was responsible for activities of the National TB Reference Laboratory including the National TB drug resistance survey in 2014 and the WHO Supra-National Reference Laboratory (WHO-SNRL) supporting activities in Malawi and Namibia. He completed post-graduate diplomas in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (WITS) as well as Infection Prevention and Control (Stellenbosch). He was appointed honorary lecturer at University of Witwatersrand in the Division of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CMID) from 2014 until 2020. AW joined Pathcare pathologists in Pretoria in 2016 where his main interest and focus are Molecular diagnostics, Sepsis, Tuberculosis and Infection Prevention and Control. He was recently appointed as extraordinary lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Pretoria for pre- and post-graduate training as well as to continue his research activities in molecular epidemiology of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) and mycobacteria. He oversees the molecular laboratory in Centurion and his current role also includes optimizing testing strategies to provide cost-effective yet clinically relevant results.
