Dr Hannes Slabbert

Before embarking on his medical career Dr Hannes Slabbert studied science, graduating an MSc (biochemistry) from Stellenbosch University in 2003. He then worked for four years as research assistant in the department of medical virology at Stellenbosch University / Tygerberg hospital. During that period, he did research on HIV molecular biology and on the development of inhouse real-time PCR diagnostic assays.

After completing his community service in 2016 Hannes did not take long to return to the more familiar laboratory environment and started his registrar training in medical microbiology in 2017 at the NHLS Tygerberg hospital laboratory. Hannes obtained his FCPath (medical microbiology) in 2021 and only stayed on briefly at the NHLS before joining Pathcare at the Cape Town northern suburbs in March 2023. Given his background in molecular biology, Hannes has a keen interest in seeing how molecular diagnostics will advance clinical microbiology and believes PathCare is very well suited at continuing to make inroads in this field.
