Nickie completed her MBChB at the University of the Free State in 1999 and her MMed (Virology) in 2005. Following a year at the University of Oxford as a research fellow, she continued to work as a pathologist at the NHLS in Bloemfontein and obtained her PhD in Virology through the UFS in 2014. Nickie was appointed as Head of the newly established Division of Virology in 2017. She joined the PathCare Vermaak team as a Clinical Virologist in July 2021 and retains an appointment as affiliated Associate Professor at the UFS. Her research interests include HIV, hepatitis B and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus.
