Prof Jos Hille
Prof Jos Hille is an Oral & Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Surgical Pathologist with 36 years of experience as a diagnostician in Histo- & Cytopathology, and clinical Oral Medicine.
Jos Hille graduated in Dentistry at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) in 1982 and further trained as a specialist at the University of the Witwatersrand from which he graduated with a master’s degree in 1986. In April 1988 he was appointed as Head of Department of Oral Pathology to the University of the Western Cape and promoted to full professor in 1997. Between 1999 and 2003 he spent a fellowship year in advanced Oral Pathology and Head & Neck Pathology at the Mount Sinai ICAN School of Medicine, New York, USA. He is a fellow of the South African Colleges of Pathology and Dentistry. He has been very active in training specialists in Oral & Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Pathology for South Africa and in sub-Saharan African countries.
Prof Hille is internationally recognized for his diagnostic expertise in the areas of head & neck cancer, oral mucosal diseases, especially potentially malignant disorders of the Upper Aero-Digestive Tract (UADT) mucosa, salivary gland pathology and maxillofacial bone pathology. His current interests are focused on the implementation of biological markers for early carcinogenesis of the UADT into diagnostic practice.
He retired from his full-time academic career in 2022, and he currently teaches and consults as a part-time Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology of the University of the Western Cape. He consults in his own Oral Diseases Clinics in Cape Town in close cooperation with PathCare. He is the pathologist member of multidisciplinary management teams of Head & Neck Cancer and Oro-Facial Pain in Cape Town.
